1.         Introduction

The New NSITF has emerged at the onset of a new administration and under a new leadership to execute its statutory mandate of providing social security services to the poor, the aged, the disabled and disadvantaged members of the population. This role is clearly specified in the NSITF Act, No 73, 1993 and the Pension Reform Act, 2004. In addition, stakeholders which included Labour, Civil Society, International Bodies represented by the ILO and the General Public, at a National Summit in November 2005, endorsed NSITF as the agency for the implementation of social and poverty alleviation related programmes in Nigeria.

The New NSITF just organized a National Conference on Social Security in view of the socio-economic situation in the country which, inter-alia, is characterized by mass unemployment and mass poverty. This effort therefore was to sensitise the government and the general public on the present Administartion.
